I know a lot of you guys use the water from the ocean for your aquariums.
I will be in Steinjker for 3 months which I am assuming the water is pretty clean and will set up a little tank while I am there. Can someone tell me what the salinity of the water is? Is it sometimes too salty and you have to put more fresh water in? Thanks Eric |

I have measured the salinity here a few times, this is outside Bergen, further south. The salinity is about 30 ppt out in the open sea. This is probably beacuse of the coastal current, that is fresher than proper sea water. In the fjords it varies a lot. Some fjords also have a very fresh layer on top. Steinkjer is at the inner end of a very long and partly narrow fjord. The salinity there could be anything, but it is definitely lower than 35 ppt!

I am a little confused on the numbers.
If I have a refractometer and measured the salinity of the water it should be anywhere between 1.021-25. Where is the 30 and 35 coming from on your numbers below? Are you saying that it is 1.035?? |

No, sorry, I have a digital meter so I always measure salinity in parts per thousand. Specific gravity is a different unit. Measured in your unit the values will be 1.023 (30) and 1.026 (35) at a temperature of 26C (78.8F).

Thats perfect SalTiE! My relatives are going to give me about 5 gallons of water from the fishery she works at in Trondheim. Not sure what the salinity of that will be but I know it is deep water.
I have to try and get my corals to Norway - Zoas and star polyps. I think I can do it with the carry on bag, and in my luggage as they dont require too much water and I will wrap them in newspaper. I just dont want them to scan my suitcase and make me lose my flight because it is not allowed. I dont see any problems though except on the Norwegian side of the customs. What do you think? |

I think "softies" like Zoa's, and Star polyps, are pretty legal to import
Just pack it bags, newspaper, then in a styrofoam box. Check that your specific flight, have a "animal compartment" (heated baggage room) Check it in as animal(special baggage) Then you only need the right papers :cheesy: |

Yeah, thats right, dont have any papers so looks like I wont be bringing anything on the plane. I will be probably staying at a house in Steinkjer.
I will get water from there and set up my tank and go to Trondheim for coral or whatever. Sucks to give up all my fish and snails and zoas. I am shipping a lot of sand and quite a few rocks. We will be in Norway on the 29th of April and I will right in the middle of nowhere!! |
